Spirometry

What is spirometry testing?

The test is carried out using a machine called a spirometer which measures how well your lungs work. Reversibility testing involves performing spirometry before and after you have taken medication and is sometimes done to investigate a diagnosis of asthma, or when diagnosis is not clear.

The result is considered normal if your score is 80 percent or more of the predicted value. You can get a general idea of your predicted normal value with a spirometry calculator.

Advantages to Measure Spirometry:

  • How well your lungs work by measuring how much air you inhale, how much you exhale and how quickly you exhale
  • Spirometry is used to diagnose asthma
  • To diagnose chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other conditions that affect breathing.
